To enhance preparedness in our community, the Carol Stream Police Department offers a free Active Shooter & Assailant Awareness Program to all Carol Stream schools, businesses, and organizations that operate out of any facility within the Village of Carol Stream at no cost.

The Active Shooter & Assailant Awareness Program explains active shooters/assailants and why a safety plan is needed. The program objectives encompass the following:
  • Defining an active shooter/assailant.

  • Formulation of a plan when faced with an active shooter/assailant situation.

  • Assessing the environment and plan of each individual for viability.

  • Conducting a simulated active shooter/assailant exercise.

The format can be modified to fit any schedule at least 1.5 hours long. The format can consist of three options:
  1. PowerPoint accompanied by a question-and-answer period. Typically, 1.5 to 2 hours long, depending on the group size.
  2. PowerPoint plus a physical walk-through of an employee’s work area. Each area discusses a safety plan for viability with each employee. Typically, 3 to 4 hours, depending on group size.
  3. PowerPoint, physical walk-through of each area an employee works, and a mock scenario. With the addition of a mock scenario, typically, 4 to 6 hours are required. It is possible to do the scenario on a different day, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
