Every year, the Public Works Department receives calls from area homeowners regarding mailboxes they believe have been damaged by Village snowplows. Upon investigations of these complaints, it is most often determined that the damage could have been prevented had the mailbox been properly installed. As the diagram below indicates, mailboxes must be installed 42" above the ground with the face of the mailbox one foot behind the curb. Apparently some mailboxes are installed so that the post and not the face is one foot from the curb. Such installation procedures cause the mailbox to protrude into the street and into the path of the snowplows.
The Village's policy is that a properly installed mailbox is 42 inches above the ground with the face of the mailbox at least one foot behind the back of the curb. Click on the following link to see diagram on proper installation: MailboxSpec .
