Water Distribution

DESIGN STANDARDS

The design, materials, installation, and testing of any proposed connection or extension to the Village’s water distribution system shall be in accordance with the 35 Ill. Adm. Code 653.

PIPE FOR WATER MAINS AND WATER SERVICES

  • DISTRIBUTION MAIN; WATER QUALITY. Any proposed distribution system that does not provide a minimum of two (2) separate sources of pressure and volume shall be designed to prevent water quality issues (i.e. stagnation). The design shall consider the affect that the anticipated movement of water will have on the water’s age and quality. Additional measures may be required by the Village Engineer if sufficient information to the satisfaction of the Village Engineer cannot be provided.
  • DISTRIBUTION MAIN; FIRE FLOW. The proposed distribution system shall be sized to provide sufficient capacity to deliver the required fire flow to all areas served by the proposed construction with consumption at the maximum daily rate. Revise Section 653.117(d)(1) such that the minimum size water main in distribution systems shall be eight (8) inch nominal diameter in residential areas and ten (10) inch nominal diameter for all non-residential areas.
    • MAXIMUM DAY CONSUMPTION. For purposes of water main design, maximum day consumption in residential areas shall be based on 200 gallons per capita per day. In other than residential areas maximum day consumption shall be based on the type of development and the following Table. For other than residential developments, when the details of the development are not known, maximum day consumption and fire flow shall be estimated by the Developer subject to the approval of the Village Engineer.  Such approval shall not relieve the Developer from the responsibility of providing adequate fire flow capacity for any and all future developments within their development.

  • WATER SERVICES; SIZE. Water Services shall be a minimum of one and one-half (1.5) inches nominal diameter for single and dual unit residential.
  • WATER SERVICES; TRENCHLESS. When a water service is installed beneath existing roadways, sidewalks, and/or driveways, the pipe shall be installed trenchless construction methods.
  • DEPTH OF BURY. The minimum depth of bury (cover) shall be five-and-one-half (5.5) feet. The maximum depth of bury shall be eight (8) feet.
  • SELECT GRANULAR MATERIAL. All water main shall be designed to minimize the length where the edge of trench will be within 2 feet of existing or proposed, public, roadway pavement. Otherwise, selected granular material shall be required for the final backfill.

SYSTEM VALVES

  • SPACING. System, shut-off valves shall be spaced along a distribution main to limit interruption to no more than thirty (30) residential services nor further than 1,000 feet apart. In non-residential areas, valves shall be spaced no further than 800 feet apart.
  • ISOLATION. No more than three (3), system, shut-off valves shall be necessary to isolate a main.
  • PLACEMENT; PROHIBITED. Placement of the enclosures’ access points (i.e. vaults, boxes, etc.) shall be outside roadway pavement, driveways, sidewalks and multi-use paths whenever practical.
  • PRESSURE CONNECTIONS. Pressure connections to an existing water main are required unless a dry connection can be made within a timeframe that is acceptable to affected users and the Director of Public Works.

 SERVICE VALVES

  • PLACEMENT. Service valves and their enclosures shall be within the right-of-way and within seven (7) feet of the property line.
  • MARKING. The barrier curb shall be stamped with the letter "W" at the closest location to the valve.

FIRE HYDRANTS

  • SPACING. Fire hydrants shall be installed on water mains in the dedicated right-of-way at maximum intervals of 300 feet in a direct line. Fire hydrants on water mains outside of the dedicated right-of-way shall be located to provide appropriate firefighting coverage for the existing and/or proposed land use.

CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS

The materials, installation, and testing shall be in accordance with the Standard Specifications for Water & Sewer Construction in Illinois, 8th Edition (SSWS). Local amendments to Division IV are as follows:

PIPE FOR WATER MAINS AND WATER SERVICES (SECTION 40)
PIPE INSTALLATION FOR WATER MAINS (SECTION 41)
GATE VALVES FOR WATER MAINS AND WATER SERVICES (SECTION 42)
VALVE VAULTS AND BOXES FOR WATER MAINS AND WATER SERVICES (SECTION 44)
