Street Lighting

DESIGN STANDARDS

STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM

  • SYSTEM. The street lighting system is to be constructed within rights-of-way, within easements when rights-of-way is not available, and generally located on one side of the street.
  • CIRCUITS. Circuiting for all street lighting systems shall be 120/240 volt, single phase, 60 cycle, 3 wire; multiple circuits shall be provided.
  • CONNECTION. When street lights have been installed and inspected, the street light connection form must be filled out and submitted. The Village Engineer will submit this form to Commonwealth Edison Co. who will then connect the lights. The Village will pay all electrical charges.  The developer is still responsible for all maintenance until accepted by the Village Board.
  • WATTAGE.  The following wattages are based on the proposed land use.
    • Residential: 100
    • Industrial: 150
    • Commercial: 150
  • HORIZONTAL FOOT CANDLES. The following minimum horizontal foot candles are based on the proposed land use assuming local traffic conditions. Lower maximums may be required for roadways with higher traffic volumes or speeds.
    • Residential: 0.2
    • Industrial: 0.4
    • Commercial: 0.6
  • UNIFORMITY RATIO. The following maximum uniformity ratios are based on the proposed land use assuming local traffic conditions. Lower maximums may be required for roadways with higher traffic volumes or speeds.
    • Residential: 1:10 feet
    • Industrial: 1:8 feet
    • Commercial: 1:6 feet

CABLE

  • LOCATION. 2 feet, 6 inches from back-of-curb.
  • BURIAL DEPTH. 2 feet, 6 inches below top-of-curb.
  • HAND HOLES. Required at the ends of all conduit beneath roadways to facilitate pulling cable. When in conduit between light poles, additional intermediate locations shall be provided upon direction from the Village Engineer.

POLES

  • LOCATION. 2 feet, 6 inches from back-of-curb.
  • INTERSECTIONS. At least one luminaire oriented at right angles to the roadway centerline shall be provided at each four-way intersection at about the point of tangency of the return on the far side of the street in the major direction of traffic. For “T” intersections, a luminaire shall be provided on the centerline extended on the intersecting roadway at the top of the “T”.
  • SPACING. The following maximum spacings are based on the proposed land use assuming local traffic conditions. Lower maximums may be required for roadways with higher traffic volumes or speeds.
    • Residential: 300 feet
    • Industrial: 300 feet
    • Commercial: 165 feet

CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS

The materials, installation, and testing shall be in accordance with the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction (SSRBC), latest edition. In the interest of encouraging uniform appearance, standardization of replacement parts, and familiarization of maintenance personnel with the equipment, the Village has selected certain standards that are to be incorporated into the contract documents for the proposed development. Local amendments to DIVISION 1000. MATERIALS are as follows:

Section 1065. PROTECTIVE DEVICES
Section 1066. WIRE AND CABLE
Section 1067. LUMINAIRE
Section 1068. CONTROLLER
Section 1069. POLE AND TOWER
Section 1070. FOUNDATION AND BREAKAWAY DEVICES
