The Village receives a portion of retail sales taxes (formally known as Retailers Occupation Tax) collected by businesses operating within Carol Stream.  Questions related to the collection and administration of sales taxes should be directed to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

All Illinois municipalities receive 1.00% (representing 16%) of the State of Illinois base sales tax rate of 6.25% on general merchandise sales.  In addition, municipalities that have "home rule" designation may impose an additional sales tax (home rule sales tax) on top of the state base rate.  As of July 1, 2018, Carol Stream collects an additional 1.00% home rule sales tax, similar to many of its municipal peers.
