"EROSION" - The wearing away of sand, soil, and rock by moving water or wind.

INTRODUCTION

The Village has been aware and concerned of EROSION along our local waterways (i.e. streams, creeks, and ponds) for several decades, and flooding for even longer. While there have been several projects with DuPage County designed and constructed to address flooding, addressing soil erosion has lagged behind.

In the early 2000's the Village restored and stabilized its pond shorelines with native plants. After years of planning and pursuit of funding, the Village is now in a position to move forward with stabilizing the stream banks. Due to the fact that most of these stream banks are within or immediately adjacent to private property, the Village is establishing this website as an initial source of information for residents.

In 2017, the Village took photos of every property along Klein Creek in order to document the extent of the stream bank erosion. These photos are available as two story maps that are accessible via the links below:

PROJECT OVERVIEW

PUBLIC OUTREACH

The Village conducted a public open house on May 15, 2017. At that meeting, the concept design for Klein Creek - Section I were presented. The Village's professional engineering consultant, Engineering Resource Associates, Inc. conducted a brief presentation to the participants.

A staff presentation was made to the Board of Trustees on November 1, 2021. The presentation provided a high-level overview of several design concepts that will be included with the construction of Section I.

RESIDENT FEEDBACK

In conjunction with Engineering Resource Associates, Inc., the Village has created an online survey for residents who live along the creeks. The intent is to help inform the Village of the various perceptions of the creek and what expectations that may exist. Residents that do not live along the creek may also take the survey, but they will be asked to provide only general feedback on water quality of local waterways.

THE SURVEY PERIOD HAS ENDED - THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED.

SECTIONS I, II, III, IV & Kehoe Boulevard

For planning purposes and due to funding constraints, Klein Creek has been split up into four, distinct sections. In addition, the stream bank along Kehoe Boulevard has been split into two sections: the first, Section I, was stabilized at the end of 2020. Aside from the obvious need due to its severity, completing this stretch was also intended to serve as the pilot project for future stream bank stabilization.

A separate website (aka Project Subpage) has been setup for each in order to provide details and progress updates that are specific just to that section. Residents who wish to get a "real-life" look at what the stream bank stabilization will look like upon completion are encouraged to visit Kehoe Boulevard's Section or view its Project Subpage:

Examples of the various features (i.e. bio-engineering techniques) that will be used throughout each section in order to address the stream bank erosion, improve water quality, and restore aquatic life habitat are illustrated in the slide show below:
